Sustainable Event Planning: How to Make a Difference

Sustainability is more than just the latest trend; it’s a responsibility. As event planners, our choices can significantly impact the environment. By embracing sustainable practices, we reduce our environmental impact and leave a positive legacy for future generations.

Helping clients plan events with an eye on sustainability is positively our jam!

How Can You Ensure Your Event is Truly Sustainable?

A sustainable event sounds great, right? But how are you going to actually know if you are making a difference?

The answer lies in setting clear, measurable, achievable goals. Start by setting sustainability goals around indicators of your event's carbon footprint. For example, you could aim to reduce non-recyclable waste by a certain percentage or set parameters for carbon footprint reduction compared to previous events. Setting these goals early on will help you stay focused and ensure that your event is truly sustainable.

Choosing the Right Venue: A Step Towards Green Events

Did you know that the venue you select can influence your event’s sustainability? Opt for spaces with eco-friendly features such as LEED certification, renewable energy sources, and water conservation programs. And picking a location that is easily accessible by public transportation to minimize the carbon footprint of your attendees!

Materials Matter: Tips for a Greener Event

Using sustainable materials for your event can significantly reduce waste and environmental impact, but what does that look like? We work with our clients to choose recycled paper for invitations, brochures, and event programs as an easy start -and avoid plastic where possible!

I always consider using biodegradable or compostable products if single-use items are necessary. They've come a long way!

Food Choices That Benefit the Planet

Serving sustainable food and beverages is a great way to do something good for you and the environment.

We always encourage clients to explore locally sourced, organic, and seasonal food options when planning their event catering. We get especially excited if we can talk them into providing vegetarian and vegan options, which have a lower carbon footprint than meat-based dishes -and they're delicious!

Transportation: Reducing Your Event’s Carbon Footprint

It seems obvious but choosing a venue within walking distance of your main hotel can significantly lower your event's overall environmental impact. Big win!

Encourage attendees to use sustainable transportation options, like public transport, cycling, or walking. Provide information on public transport options, and consider providing bike racks or a shuttle service to make it easier for attendees to use sustainable transport.

Salesforce’s Net Zero Marketplace - A Game-Changer

And have you heard about Salesforce's Net Zero Marketplace? It's kind of amazing.

Net Zero Marketplace connects buyers with ecopreneurs in a trusted, transparent carbon credit platform to scale climate-positive impact. What is a carbon credit? It is a transferable certificate that represents the reduction or removal of one metric tonne of carbon dioxide or equivalent.

Join Us in Making A Difference

We encourage all our clients to include a budget line item for funds to invest in carbon offset projects, such as reforestation or wetland protection. Then, of course, we get those PR miles and share the results loud and proud, lol!
